HEA 4493: Health Project Based Internship

This guide serves as a research tool for students taking the HEA 4493 project-based internship course.

Assignment

The project based internship will be completed in partnership with The Ronald McDonald House.

Background

The Ronald McDonald House New York provides temporary housing for pediatric cancer patients and their families in a strong, supportive and caring environment which encourages and nurtures the development of child-to-child and parent-to-parent support systems. The House welcomes children and families from across the country and the world. They can accommodate 84 families and is filled to capacity almost every night. Since their founding, more than 35,000 families have stayed at the House. 

Objectives

For this project based internship you will be asked to work on increasing the awareness of families in the health care units about the benefits of the new RMH Family Room at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Students will work in groups for this internship in order to complete the following objectives: 

  1. Develop and disseminate strategies to increase awareness of the newly developed family room at Kings County Hospital. 
  2. Generate strategies for attracting volunteers to help with the needs of patients and their families.  
  3. Conducting research on various organizations to support the growth and competitive advantage of the family room at Kings County Hospital.  
  4. Creating advertisements for various community establishments. 
  5. Work on special projects with classmates to develop leadership skills and demonstrate superior customer service skills in a health care facility.

Please note that each group and internship task will be assigned by your professor.

Assessment & Presentation

Project Assessment

In addition to weekly discussion board participation and a midterm PowerPoint presentation, students will work with their team members to develop a formal PowerPoint presentation to be submitted to your Professor and the Ronald McDonald House for review

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate what you have learned during this internship. In addition, the project will serve as a formal presentation to the Ronald McDonald House on how the strategies, research, and skills learned throughout the internship has provided benefits to the patients and their families who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

 

Final PowerPoint Presentation Requirements:

  • Must be saved and uploaded as a PowerPoint presentation that includes slide notes.
  • Must be in APA, including reference page and citations used for the presentations, whether directly or paraphrased. For guidance, visit the Writing & Citing tab.
  • Use a font that is clean and easy for the audience to read such as Times New Roman and no smaller than 30 in color combinations that are pleasing to the eye.

Length

  • Minimum of 3 academic or scholarly references cited in the slide presentation.
  • Pictures, tables, and graphs on at least 50% of the slides with no more than 2 graphics per slide.
  • Utilize the "1 idea or topic per slide" concept with a logical progression throughout the presentation.

Layout

  • Title slide that includes the names of all group members, the date, course, instructor, and institution.
  • Introduction slide that provides a clear and concise overview of your presentation to capture the viewer’s attention.
  • Conclusion slide that summarizes your presentation and repeats the main idea without introducing new information.
