NUR 3310: Nursing Research For Evidence Based Practice

This guide was created to help students with the research process for their EBP project in the Nursing Research course

Databases for Nursing Research

The library has many healthcare databases which include the full text of thousands of research journals on nursing, healthcare administration, psychology and other sciences. There are basic and advanced search fields and ways to limit your search to peer-reviewed or trade journals, by publication years, patient populations, only clinical trials, reports, dissertations, and EBP articles. For example, CINAHL has useful limits under "Publication Type" for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, the highest levels of evidence in the EBP pyramid.

Direct links are provided below. All databases can be also accessed from the A-Z Databases page.

Annotation Tips

Annotating your Bibliography: When reading the articles, concentrate on the Methods and Discussion sections. That will help you to evaluate them, to see how they contribute to your clinical question.

  • How strong is each study?
  • What limitations does each one have?
  • How will each one fit into your final EBP literature review?

Will it:

  • Define the problem or
  • Summarize research on your topic or
  • Cover any existing guidelines or recommendations about your topic or
  • Contribute a quantitative or qualitative research study to your paper, showing what has been tried already or
  • Show where there are areas that need further study.
