Congrats again on being hired for an onsite internship for next semester – here is a list or 12 things you need to do when you are there!
1. Be on time. Never be late. Your internship is your job and if you want it to become permanent, show them your respect and dedication.
2. If there is an issue/problem/emergency – CALL THE EMPLOYER/CONTACT/SUPERVISOR – DO NOT TEXT OR SEND EMAIL.
3. Dress appropriately. Dress for the ‘next job’ not the one you have. Be that person.
4. Finished with your project? The day’s assignment? Ask for more work. Ask of you can assist another area. Show initiative. Don’t wait for the work to come to you.
5. Take notes. Take notes so that you can read them back. Take notes so that you can read them back and they make sense to YOU…they’re YOUR notes.
6. Always have a pad and pen with you. (Yes, you can tap into your phone but why take the chance of that being misinterpreted as lack of interest?)
7. Smile. At everyone. Say thank you and please and ask people how they are. Stick around for the answer.
8. Keep track of your hours and the time you put in. It’s the ‘real world’ now and no one can do your accounting for you as well as you can.
9. Do not forget to log on to your online class and complete all tasks/assignments in a timely fashion.
10. All assignments must be submitted by Saturday at Midnight
11. Keep in touch with your Career Services Counselor and let him/her know how things are going.
12. GOOD LUCK! WE ARE EXCITED FOR YOU AND KNOW YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!
Students in school should consider planting the seeds toward their future career success - beginning from their first day in school.
A good internship is important and will always have a positive impactful on a job seekers career search. An internship allows a student to make an impact not only within a company or organization, but also within different departments (at times) of a company or organization.
Internships can also be viewed as a 15-week job interview. Try to attain more than one internship while in school if possible. Internships also build your experience, expand your professional network and are incredible resume builders.
Internships give a student the opportunity to work hard within the company or organization that you are working for and build character, prove you are responsible – and allows you to think creatively.
Get to know the key players within the internship site and show them that they can always count on you.
