Grammarly (Free Version)

Grammarly logoGrammarly (Free Version)

Students can use the free version of Grammarly to help them edit their grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Faculty can:

  • Start with short writing assignments for students to compose or upload to Grammarly, before having them tackle longer writing tasks.
  • Recommend students use Grammarly to check all types of writing: Discussion posts, emails, written assignments.
  • Ask students to reflect about their use of Grammarly (briefly in writing or in 🖱️Flip) and how it helped polish their writing, additional support they might need on certain writing issues, etc.
  • Promote the Center for Academic Success as a resource to understand Grammarly suggestions and score reports.

Students and Faculty can use Grammarly on many devices 💻📱🧑🏾‍💻

Students can use the editor on the Grammarly website to compose writing and then copy/paste it into a Canvas discussion forum, or into a document where they can add additional formatting. The Grammarly editor offers some rich text editing tools including bold, italics, and underline.

For immediate writing support during the writing process, students can type directly into the app and receive feedback as they type.

For technical support, refer to the Grammarly Support page to find apps, browser extensions, and tips for using it. Grammarly also has a helpful YouTube channel with tutorials to help faculty and students better understand the features of the app and how it can help improve writing.

Students can use Grammarly to...

  • Check discussion posts, essays, and other written assessments for grammar, punctuation, and spelling before submitting their work.
  • Check statistics on your writing and set goals for improvement

If students need additional tools to support writing, they can use...

  • Hemingway helps identify complex sentences, passive voice, and other common errors. This tool provides suggestions to help simplify and clarify writing.
  • WordTune (a Chrome extension) to help with phrasing that makes writing clearer
  • PlagiarismChecker.ai allows you to check 1000 words at a time for plagiarism
Remember: No software can guarantee that a text is 100% original. Even if text isn't flagged as plagiarism by tools like PlagiarismChecker.ai, that does not mean it's not plagiarized. Tools can help identify and correct potential plagiarism, but students need to use their judgment to ensure their text is original.
